Body Condition and Parasite Load Predict Territory Ownership in the Galápagos Hawk
نویسندگان
چکیده
We tested for associations between body condition, territory ownership, and permanent parasite load of Galápagos Hawks (Buteo galapagoensis) on Isla Marchena, Galápagos. Two louse species were collected from most of the 26 hawks sampled: the amblyceran Colpocephalum turbinatum and the ischnoceran Degeeriella regalis. Nonterritorial hawks were in significantly poorer body condition than territorial hawks. Body condition was negatively correlated with the abundance of C. turbinatum. Nonterritorial hawks had significantly higher mean abundances, mean intensities, and median intensities of both louse species than territorial hawks. The amblyceran’s mean abundance and intensity were significantly higher than the ischnoceran’s. Abundances of the two lice were positively related when the population size of C. turbinatum was ,100 individuals, and negatively related when .100 individuals. Parasite load and body condition both predicted territory ownership well.

Measuring fish body condition with or without parasites: does it matter?
A fish body condition index was calculated twice for each individual fish, including or excluding parasite mass from fish body mass, and index values were compared to test the effects of parasite mass on measurement of body condition. Potential correlations between parasite load and the two alternative fish condition index values were tested to assess how parasite mass may influence the percept...
متن کاملBody Condition Peaks at Intermediate Parasite Loads in the Common Bully Gobiomorphus cotidianus
Most ecologists and conservationists perceive parasitic infections as deleterious for the hosts. Their effects, however, depend on many factors including host body condition, parasite load and the life cycle of the parasite. More research into how multiple parasite taxa affect host body condition is required and will help us to better understand host-parasite coevolution. We used body condition...
متن کاملParasitism and the expression of sexual dimorphism
Although a negative covariance between parasite load and sexually selected trait expression is a requirement of few sexual selection models, such a covariance may be a general result of life-history allocation trade-offs. If both allocation to sexually selected traits and to somatic maintenance (immunocompetence) are condition dependent, then in populations where individuals vary in condition, ...

In this paper, the present investigation has been conducted keeping in mind some of the problems concerning the crack propagation direction and growth under constant loading in an inclined crack geometry. The present studies mainly focused on the development and modifications in the crack growth criterion to account the biaxial, shear loading and number of stress terms. Existing criteria for th...
متن کاملManipulating Individual Decisions and Environmental Conditions Reveal Individual Quality in Decision-Making and Non-Lethal Costs of Predation Risk
Habitat selection is a crucial decision for any organism. Selecting a high quality site will positively impact survival and reproductive output. Predation risk is an important component of habitat quality that is known to impact reproductive success and individual condition. However, separating the breeding consequences of decision-making of wild animals from individual quality is difficult. In...
